California’s Multiple Conquests: Race and Ethnicity in 19th Century California

This exciting course will aide teachers in their fulfillment of the California History/Social Science Standards by exploring critical themes and topics in 19th century California. In particular, it focuses on the shifting populations in 19th century California – the Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, and early American traders. It also fulfills the “Multicultural” LAUSD district priority by providing in-depth study and analysis of Native Americans, Spaniards, and Mexicans in the era prior to 1848 and encourages teachers to rethink their assumptions and stereotypes about the Mission era in particular.
